Impactful Speech Essay - 550 Words
Impactful Speech (Essay Sample) Content: Impact SpeechStudent NameInstitutionImpactful SpeechThere is a video presentation by Julian Treasure at the TED Global 2013 on February 2014 where he discusses the qualities that make an individuals speech powerful enough to effect change in society. Although Julian mentions the seven deadly sins of speaking that curtail ones ability to talk powerfully, he suggests alternative traits that one can use to offset these seven deadly sins. These traits are honesty, authenticity, integrity, and love. Nevertheless, Julian asserts that these traits can only be effective in speech when they are matched with the five instruments inherent in an individuals voice (Treasure, 2014). First, there is the voice register, which affects the authority of the voice of the speaker. For instance, speaking with a voice that registers from the chest area gives the impression of power. Consequently, a listener pays more attention. Secondly, he asserts that the timbre the way a voice feels to the listener is more receptive if it is smooth, rich, and warm. Third, he claims prosody, which is the way one impacts meaning in ones speech through tone variation, affects ones clarity in framing questions or statements. Fourth, Julian claims that the effective interchange of silence and the pace of ones speech are influential. Fifth, he mentions the pitch as the partner of pace in a speech that arouses the listeners interest. Lastly, he asserts that the volume in speech can either provoke excitement or make the listener pay attention. However, Julian recommends that the context in which the speech is to be made to determine the appropriate tools among the five voice instruments that are to be employed. Therefore, a person should undergo a voice training session before making a speech. In my opinion, Julian Treasure is correct. My agreement with his assertions is because the five voice instruments mentioned above are the ones most pronounced in all the famous singers all over the world. Often, these world renowned singers demonstrate exceptional abilities in the variation of their voices to match the songs rhythm or the instruments. In the process, most listeners become very attentive to an extent that many of them readily memorize the lyrics or choruses to the songs of these singers. Similarly, research studies have proven that advertisers usually consider these same voice instruments in composing the theme songs to be used in advertisements during events like the Super bowl (Allan, 2014). The careful and effective application of these voice instruments ensures that individuals communicate well with their audiences. Consequently, the world will become less chaotic because both parties in a communication process will understand each other. Conflict resolutions will be reached faster, thus possibly saving lives and properties. For example, Julian Treasure was able to elicit different responses from the audience listening to his speech in the video (Treasure, 2014). At times, he would excite them and then make them calm later. It is evident that the correct exercise of these voice instruments works. Impactful speeches affect different groups in the society. For example, students in classes or lecture halls often complain of boring teachers or instructors. Therefore, these lecturers could train their voice instruments so that their sessions become interesting and elicit the needed responses in their students. In another context, the appropriate use of voice instruments is invaluable in healing therapies. For example, a study conducted by Regina Gelfo concluded that...
